Sydney Hanukkah Shooting Case Progresses with Extensive Evidence

An ongoing legal case concerning a fatal shooting during a Hanukkah celebration in Sydney involves substantial evidence, as revealed in a recent court session. Naveed Akram, a 25-year-old man, faces accusations of murdering 15 individuals at the event held on December 14 at Bondi Beach. The incident, which police allege was motivated by the Islamic State group, is under intense legal scrutiny.

During a brief appearance at Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court, Akram was confronted with 78 charges, encompassing murder, attempted murder, and terrorist acts. Prosecutor Danielle New highlighted the vast array of evidence already compiled, indicating the depth and complexity of the case.

New stated that over 800 witness statements have been reviewed, alongside video footage, ballistic evidence, and data retrieved from seven electronic devices. However, additional evidence remains unexplored, including data from 12 more electronic devices and a report on improvised explosive device (IED) testing. The prosecution is set to update the court on October 28 regarding the progress of evidence examination.

The tragic events reportedly began when Naveed Akram and his father, Sajid Akram, aged 50, attempted to target a Jewish gathering with four IEDs. These devices, described as three aluminum pipe bombs and a tennis ball bomb, contained gunpowder, steel ball bearings, and other explosives. Although none detonated, they were classified by police as “viable” IEDs.

The attack concluded with a gunfight with police, resulting in Sajid Akram’s death and his son’s injury. Naveed Akram has yet to plead to the charges brought against him.
