Athletes Granted Temporary Eligibility to Return to College Sports

In a recent development, a Louisiana court has issued a temporary restraining order allowing several athletes, some of whom have signed contracts with NFL teams, to return to college athletics. This decision, reported by ESPN, involves notable players such as Anthony Hankerson, formerly with Oregon State and now with the Seattle Seahawks, Jack Pyburn from Florida and LSU, currently with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Dae’Quan Wright and Wydett Williams from Mississippi, who are part of the Cleveland Browns and Arizona Cardinals respectively.

The NFL is currently in the midst of training camp, with team rosters needing to be reduced to 53 players by August 30. Given this deadline, athletes who do not secure a spot could explore the option of returning to college football, unless the NCAA successfully appeals the court’s decision.

The lawsuit involves 33 athletes across various sports, including 16 football players, all seeking a fifth year of eligibility. This legal move follows a series of setbacks for the NCAA concerning its eligibility regulations.

NCAA senior vice president of external affairs, Tim Buckley, expressed concern over the court’s decision, stating, “Courts across the country granting relief to ineligible athletes who already had every opportunity to compete in college — sometimes without even having a hearing — are failing to appreciate the destabilizing effect their rulings are having on college sports.” He further commented on the potential impact on college sports, suggesting that legal actions might allow professional athletes to use college sports as a fallback option, affecting opportunities for new collegiate athletes.

On July 31, a federal court in Denver ruled that athletes from the high school class of 2022, who have exhausted their four-year college eligibility, can participate in a fifth season in the upcoming academic year. This ruling aligns with a recent NCAA rule change that extends the eligibility period, but the court’s decision removes the waiting period initially set to start in 2027.
