John Sununu’s Senate Campaign Finances Under Scrutiny
John Sununu’s campaign for the U.S. Senate has raised eyebrows due to financial transactions involving family members. Reports indicate that his sister, Catherine Sununu, received over $36,000 for consulting services, while Sununu himself was reimbursed more than $15,000.
These financial activities occurred from March to June this year, as outlined in campaign finance disclosures. Payments to Catherine Sununu were categorized as “Fundraising Consulting,” whereas John Sununu’s reimbursements were labeled “Reimbursement-See Memo,” though no memo seems to have been provided.
The Sununu Political Dynasty
The Sununu family has long been a significant presence in New Hampshire’s political scene. John H. Sununu, John’s father, served as governor from 1983 to 1989 and later as White House chief of staff under President George H.W. Bush. Chris Sununu, John’s brother, was governor from 2017 until the previous year. John Sununu himself has a history in the U.S. Senate, having served from 2003 to 2009.
Beyond politics, the Sununus hold considerable wealth. Michael Sununu, another of John’s brothers, founded Sununu Holdings LLC, an investment firm. John Sununu is a shareholder in this venture. In 2024, John H. Sununu transferred 900,000 mining stock shares to the firm.
Wealth and Campaign Payments
John Sununu’s net worth is reported to be up to $36.3 million, while Chris Sununu’s estimated worth is $7.4 million. The significant wealth of the Sununu family raises questions about the necessity of John’s campaign employing family members.
Catherine Sununu has faced previous scrutiny regarding financial benefits linked to her family’s political influence. In 2017, her interior design company received $50,188 for Chris Sununu’s inauguration supplies and decor. Catherine played a role on the committee that approved this spending.
The Union Leader highlighted that Catherine’s company lacked a website and a working phone number. She justified the payment by stating she “did everything” for the inauguration planning.
Upcoming Political Challenge
John Sununu’s return bid for the Senate is anticipated to be fiercely contested. He is set to compete against former Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown in the September 8 primary. The victor will likely face Democratic Representative Chris Pappas in the general election.
