Democratic Lawmakers Press Trump to Abandon Controversial Tariff Strategy

Democratic state legislators have formally addressed President Donald Trump, urging a reversal of his tariff policy initiated a year ago. The call for change comes as the economic repercussions of the tariffs weigh heavily on both businesses and consumers.

In a letter, Trump’s declaration of April 2 as “Liberation Day” was highlighted, a day when tariffs were levied on 90 countries. The policy was initially introduced with the promise of revitalizing American manufacturing and increasing job opportunities.

However, the letter challenges this narrative, stating, “Instead, your Liberation Day tariffs have liberated our constituents of their savings, their jobs, and their economic security.”

Tariffs, which function as taxes on imported goods, are costs that American companies often pass on to consumers, resulting in higher retail prices. An analysis by the Tax Foundation indicated that retail prices surged by 7% last year, with significant impacts on items such as vehicles, apparel, toys, and furniture.

Legal scrutiny of the tariffs has been ongoing. In February, the U.S. Supreme Court found the authority Trump used to implement the tariffs was unlawful, yet left room for potential reinstatement through alternative methods.

The tariff landscape has been further complicated by Trump’s adjustments, including both the removal and introduction of new tariffs. This has created a complex environment for businesses and consumers to navigate.

The letter from lawmakers further outlines the economic damage, noting, “The manufacturing sector has lost tens of thousands of jobs, with employment declining every single month through December.” Additionally, the nation’s economic growth has stagnated, with GDP growth at just 1.4% in the fourth quarter of 2025.

Economists suggest that the tariffs have intensified an affordability crisis already strained by persistent inflation and corporate practices. The situation has deteriorated following the U.S. invasion of Iran, which has driven gas prices over $4 a gallon for the first time in three years.

The legislators’ letter appeals for the removal of tariffs, restitution of tariff costs to Americans, and a focus on affordability for working families. “It’s not too late to change course and finally focus on what Americans actually care about,” the letter concludes.

Signatories of the letter include representatives from Maryland, New Hampshire, Illinois, Iowa, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Texas, Minnesota, and Michigan. Among them is Maryland Rep. Adrian Boafo, who is currently pursuing a congressional seat.
