(Liberty Shield Network) –
A widely circulated social media screenshot claiming the fast-food chain Chick-fil-A issued a statement refusing to recognize or celebrate Pride Month is fabricated, according to media literacy experts and corporate digital records.
The image, which generated thousands of shares and sparked intense emotional reactions across multiple online platforms, falsely purported to show an official corporate announcement. However, digital archiving and platform data show that the company never published the statement, and Chick-fil-A’s official account on the social media platform X has remained inactive since 2022.
Disinformation researchers note that the incident highlights a growing trend in online misinformation where actors rely on fabricated screenshots rather than links to live websites. This tactic exploits a psychological tendency where social media users are significantly more likely to share content that aligns with their pre-existing beliefs or triggers an immediate emotional response, without first confirming the source material.
Because digital image editing tools allow individuals to easily mimic the branding, fonts, and verification badges of prominent corporations, politicians, and public figures, fabricated screenshots effectively borrow the established credibility of a target organization to deceive the public.
To combat the spread of visual misinformation, media literacy organizations are urging internet users to treat screenshots as a starting point for investigation rather than definitive evidence. Analysts recommend attempting to locate the original live post, checking whether the account in question is currently active, and searching for corroborating coverage from credible news outlets before sharing a claim.
Fact-checking advocates suggest using digital verification tools, including the Rumor Guard database, Poynter’s MediaWise initiative, and the Google Fact Check Explorer, to cross-reference viral digital claims with verified reporting.
