Tragic Loss: Texas Father Shares Heartbreaking Story of Wife’s Preventable Death
This story first appeared in Courier Texas
Hope Negumezi recounts the tragic death of his pregnant wife, Porsha, who died waiting for medical care during a miscarriage. This article contains sensitive content about miscarriage and death.
Hope Negumezi questions, “How the hell did my pregnant wife, Porsha, come to the hospital for help with a miscarriage and just a few hours later, leave in a body bag?” The sudden death of his wife at a Texas hospital left him bewildered and searching for answers.
In 2023, Hope discovered that Porsha’s death was preventable. He realized a year later that her life might have been saved if not for a Texas law that banned abortion, enacted after the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Hope and Porsha were aware of the abortion ban but didn’t foresee its impact on healthcare for pregnancy complications. Porsha was 11 weeks pregnant with their third child, a time of joy and anticipation for the family, which included two young sons aged 3 and 5.
In June, they planned a trip to Kalahari water park near Austin to celebrate the end of the school year. Porsha, who had planned the vacation, began experiencing spotting and consulted her OB-GYN, who advised her to visit a hospital if the condition worsened.
Upon returning home, Porsha’s condition deteriorated. She was taken to Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, where she experienced a partial miscarriage in the bathroom after waiting for several hours.
Despite the critical situation, Porsha had not been seen by a hospital OB-GYN and was still losing significant amounts of blood. Hope felt reassured that she was in good hands, as miscarriages are not uncommon, and expected she would receive appropriate care.
However, Porsha was given misoprostol, a drug deemed inappropriate for her condition, instead of receiving a D&C (dilation and curettage) to remove fetal tissue and prevent further bleeding, as recommended by medical experts who reviewed her case.
Hope recounts the distressing sequence of events as Porsha’s condition worsened. Despite repeated complaints of chest pain, her medical concerns were not promptly addressed, leading to a critical situation where she began gasping for air.
A “Code Blue” was called as Porsha struggled to breathe, but attempts to revive her were unsuccessful. Porsha was pronounced dead at 2 a.m., leaving Hope devastated and grappling with the realization that her death was preventable.
Hope describes the immense pain of telling their young sons about their mother’s death and the ongoing challenges of raising them as a single father while coping with grief.
A year after Porsha’s death, Hope was contacted by ProPublica journalists who revealed the potential impact of Texas’s abortion ban on her medical treatment. The law’s severe penalties for doctors may have influenced the medical decisions made during Porsha’s care.
The tragic story highlights the unintended consequences of legislative decisions on healthcare, as Hope reflects on the laws meant to protect rather than endanger lives.
