Southwest Division Teams Strengthen Front Court in NBA Draft First Round

The Memphis Grizzlies, Dallas Mavericks, and San Antonio Spurs added key front-court prospects in the NBA draft.
Grizzlies, Mavs and Spurs bring top front-court prospects to the Southwest Division in the NBA draft

In a dynamic first round of the NBA draft, three teams from the Southwest Division enhanced their squads with promising front-court talent. The Memphis Grizzlies, Dallas Mavericks, and San Antonio Spurs focused on bolstering their rosters with young big men, each selecting players who could significantly impact their future strategies.

Memphis Grizzlies

The Memphis Grizzlies used their third overall pick to secure Duke’s forward, Cameron Boozer. Standing at 6-foot-9, Boozer is anticipated to form an impressive rebounding partnership with Zach Edey. Boozer expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We automatically become one of the best rebounding duos in the league. It’s going to be exciting to see what different types of things we can do—really mess up other teams and cause some mismatches for sure.”

In addition to Boozer, Memphis capitalized on strategic trades, moving from the 16th to the 21st pick, acquiring five second-round picks in the process. With their 21st pick, they drafted Karim Lopez, a forward from Mexico who played with the New Zealand Breakers. Boozer has drawn comparisons to seasoned players like Al Horford and Kevin Love, while Lopez’s game is likened to Kyle Kuzma.

Dallas Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks, seeking to reinforce their roster, picked Michigan’s Morez Johnson Jr. at the ninth spot. Johnson, known for his defensive prowess, has been compared to Miami’s Bam Adebayo. However, his offensive game is still evolving. Johnson played a pivotal role in Michigan’s recent NCAA championship win, averaging 13.1 points and 7.3 rebounds.

Dallas also acquired Sergio De Larrea from Spain in a trade with the Knicks, selecting him at 25th overall. De Larrea, a point guard, chose to develop his career in the EuroLeague, following in the footsteps of Luka Doncic, although such comparisons remain premature.

San Antonio Spurs

After a tough loss in the NBA Finals, the Spurs aimed to strengthen their front court by drafting Kentucky’s Jayden Quaintance at 20th overall. Quaintance, who had a challenging college career due to injuries, is recognized for his defensive skills, drawing parallels to Robert Williams III and Clint Capela. Offensively, he resembles Jalen Duren with his inside play.

San Antonio further bolstered their lineup by acquiring Tarris Reed Jr. from Connecticut in a trade at 26th overall. Reed, with a solid back-to-the-basket game, has been compared to Joakim Noah. Both Quaintance and Reed are expected to enhance the team’s defensive capabilities.

Houston Rockets and New Orleans Pelicans

The Houston Rockets and New Orleans Pelicans entered the draft without first-round picks. Houston, facing challenges in perimeter shooting and depth due to past trades, is set to make their selections in the second round at 39th and 53rd overall. The Pelicans, having traded their first-round choice to Atlanta, were positioned to pick 58th. Despite efforts to trade back into the first round, neither team found a suitable deal.
