North Carolina’s Rece Verhoff Rejoins Team Under New Eligibility Guidelines
In a notable development in college sports, Rece Verhoff, a kicker, has returned to the University of North Carolina (UNC) for a fifth year. This comes after a federal court decision granted additional eligibility to athletes from the high school class of 2022, tied to the NCAA’s newly introduced eligibility model. The ruling has opened the door for Verhoff’s return to the Tar Heels.
Verhoff’s return was first revealed on social media, where a post highlighted him practicing with the team. UNC’s Coach Bill Belichick acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding potential further legal developments, stating that the situation is currently “temporary” with the team gearing up for their season opener in Dublin, Ireland against TCU.
“Certainly he was a great teammate for us last year,” Belichick remarked. “So we welcomed him back. We’ll see what happens with this process. That’s all out of our control. There are multiple other legal situations going on that could directly or indirectly involve him. But as it stands right now, we’ll proceed with what appears to be the current ruling.”
The ruling was handed down by U.S. District Judge Charlotte Sweeney in Colorado, impacting athletes who commenced their college careers in the 2022-23 academic year and have completed four seasons of eligibility. Notably, the decision excludes football players who have signed professional contracts over the summer.
This development follows the NCAA’s approval of its “five for five” rule in June. This rule permits Division I athletes to compete for five seasons within a five-year period starting from either their full-time enrollment or the academic year after their 19th birthday, whichever comes first. Initially set to take effect for students enrolling in fall 2027, the rule has already led to lawsuits from the 2022 class athletes, seeking an additional year.
While it remains uncertain how many athletes will use this ruling to return to college sports, Indiana’s defensive end Stephen Daley has already rejoined his team, as noted by Belichick. Verhoff, who started his college journey at Marshall in 2022, transferred to UNC for his fourth season, during which he successfully made 19 of 23 field goals and all 20 extra-point attempts.
Belichick further explained, “Rece went here so that really made him eligible based on one set of rulings. There are other rulings out there that are in dispute. And so similar to the situation at Indiana yesterday that Coach (Curt) Cignetti talked about, pretty much the same thing here. He’s come back to the school that he was at last year. And that’s where it’s at.”
