Controversy Surrounds NC GOP Appointments
Concerns have emerged regarding appointments made by Michael Whatley, former head of the North Carolina Republican Party, involving Harvey West, a registered sex offender. These decisions have raised questions about West’s proximity to young adults during his tenure.
Michael Whatley, who led the party from 2019 to 2024, assigned West to significant roles within the organization. According to Asheville Watchdog, West was appointed to the 1st Congressional District Committee and the Plan of Organization Committee.
West’s criminal history dates back to the year 2000, when he pleaded guilty to charges of taking indecent liberties with a minor, involving two 14-year-olds and a 16-year-old. His sentence included six years in prison and a requirement to register as a sex offender. West claims his plea was strategic, opting to avoid a potentially harsher sentence, a detail he disclosed to the party prior to his appointments, as noted in an interview with PolitiFact.
During Whatley’s leadership, West attended nearly 30 meetings of the North Carolina Republican Party State Central Committee. These meetings also included members of the North Carolina Teenage Republicans. An image shared on Whatley’s official Facebook page in August 2022 depicted West seated next to the chair of the teenage group.
West’s roles provided him opportunities to participate in various events with young attendees. In September 2020, he was seen in a photograph with the chairwoman of the North Carolina Young Republicans at a voter mobilization event in Plymouth, NC. Additionally, he appeared in a photo at the state GOP convention, later shared on the Inner Banks Young Republicans’ Instagram.
His involvement extended to being a delegate at the 2020 and 2024 Republican National Conventions, events that also saw participation from high school students. In September 2019, both West and Whatley were present at a recruitment dinner for President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign, an event that included children and teenagers.
Importantly, since his release, West has not faced any allegations of misconduct. However, his past continues to shadow Whatley, who is currently pursuing a U.S. Senate seat against former Governor Roy Cooper in what is anticipated to be a highly competitive race in 2026.
