Iranian National Returns Amidst Diplomatic Tensions
An Iranian citizen, Mahdieh Esfandiari, who was convicted in France for inciting terrorism, has returned to Iran following the release of two French nationals from detention in Tehran, according to Iranian state media.
Esfandiari was sentenced by a Paris court in February to a year in prison and a three-year suspended term for remarks about the Hamas-led attacks on Israel dated October 7, 2023. Additionally, she was banned for life from entering France. Her lawyer, Nabil Boudi, confirmed her appeal against the verdict.
Initially placed under house arrest, Esfandiari was freed from this measure last week, shortly after French citizens Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris left Iran. Kohler and Paris had been held for over three years in Tehran’s Evin prison on charges of espionage, which they and the French government denied. Despite their release from prison in November, they remained in French diplomatic protection as Iran restricted their departure.
In a televised interview, Esfandiari expressed her disapproval of the court’s decision, stating it was “unjust” and insisted she had merely spoken “the truth.”
Her release coincided with the return of Kohler and Paris, leading Esfandiari to link her case with theirs. “On the very same day that they were released … they (French authorities) released me,” she stated.
Reports from Iran suggested a diplomatic agreement facilitated the exchange, allowing Kohler and Paris to leave in return for Esfandiari’s freedom. However, French President Emmanuel Macron’s office refuted any claims of a formal agreement for a prisoner swap, and French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot stated that negotiation details with Iran would remain “confidential.”
Iranian authorities have been advocating for Esfandiari’s release since last year. Meanwhile, Kohler and Paris recounted their ordeal in Evin prison as “hell,” describing their experiences as filled with “daily horror.” They were apprehended during a vacation in Iran in May 2022.
