Brno Court Sentences Man for Attempted Terror Attack and Murder

A court in Brno, the Czech Republic’s second-largest city, has sentenced a 20-year-old man to seven years in prison for his involvement in an attempted terror attack and attempted murder. The sentencing took place on Tuesday.

In January 2024, the defendant and another teenager, both under 18 at the time, attempted to set fire to a synagogue in Brno using an improvised device. They also made an attempt on an individual’s life, who fortunately survived the ordeal.

In addition to the main charges, the convicted man received an additional two-year sentence for promoting terrorism, a crime he committed after reaching adulthood.

His partner in the crime could not be tried due to being below the legal age for prosecution. The legal proceedings for this case were conducted behind closed doors.

The two teenagers were part of a larger group of five individuals arrested last year. Czech authorities reported that the group had been radicalized online by the Islamic State group.

The group was reportedly involved in spreading hate speech on social media targeting minorities, the LGBTQ+ community, and Jewish people. Police in Czechia and Austria confiscated several weapons, including knives, machetes, axes, and gas pistols, during raids.

Officials also mentioned that the teenagers participated in online forums recruiting fighters for IS militants in Syria. They shared interests in violence and expressed hatred against Jews, LGBTQ+ individuals, and other groups.

The investigation was a collaborative effort between Czech authorities and their counterparts in Austria, Britain, and Slovakia, with support from Europol, the European Union’s law enforcement agency.
