Arizona Football Players Return After Court Grants Extra Eligibility
Two key players from the University of Arizona’s football team, running back Ismail Mahdi and linebacker Max Harris, have resumed participation in preseason activities. This follows a recent court decision that offers an additional year of eligibility to athletes who commenced their collegiate careers in the 2022-23 academic year.
U.S. District Judge Charlotte Sweeney, based in Colorado, ruled in favor of granting this extra year of eligibility for athletes who have already completed four seasons. However, the ruling excludes football players who have signed professional contracts during the summer. This development aligns with the NCAA’s “five-for-five rule,” adopted in June, which permits Division I athletes five seasons of competition spread over five years. The rule was initially intended for athletes enrolling in fall 2027, prompting lawsuits from the Class of 2022 for immediate application.
The NCAA has expressed its intention to challenge the court’s decision through an appeal process. The five-for-five initiative allows athletes to maximize their competitive years, beginning with full-time college enrollment.
Mahdi, who led Arizona with 853 rushing yards and four touchdowns last season, also made 17 receptions for 119 yards and another touchdown. Harris earned recognition as an All-Big 12 honorable mention with 78 tackles, including 3.5 tackles for loss last season.
