Father Seeks New Trial After Conviction in Georgia School Shooting Case

A man sentenced to 15 years for his involvement in a tragic school shooting in Georgia is pursuing a new trial. Colin Gray, convicted earlier this year, is challenging the jury’s verdict, claiming it lacks evidential support and contradicts legal and ethical standards.

The shooting occurred on September 4, 2024, at Apalachee High School, located approximately 45 miles northeast of Atlanta. It resulted in the deaths of two students and two teachers. Gray’s son, Colt Gray, responsible for the shooting, received a life sentence without parole.

Colin Gray was found guilty of second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter. The charges stem from his actions of providing his son with a semiautomatic rifle, ammunition, and additional shooting accessories as a Christmas present. This sentence places him among a select group of American parents criminally charged in connection with their children’s involvement in shootings.

Under Georgia law, second-degree murder is defined as causing a child’s death through acts of cruelty. The jury determined that Gray’s actions contributed to the deaths of two 14-year-old students, Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo. Additionally, the involuntary manslaughter charge pertains to the deaths of teachers Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Cristina Irimie, 53.

In a recent court filing, Gray’s legal team argued that the guilty verdict is “contrary to law and the principles of justice and equity,” seeking a reconsideration of his conviction.
