British Father Permitted to Attend Son’s Funeral in the UK

A British national, facing charges of negligence following the tragic death of his 3-year-old son in Cyprus, has been granted permission to return to the UK for the child’s funeral. The decision was made by a Cypriot court, as confirmed by the man’s lawyer, Alexandros Alexandrou.

According to Alexandrou, the court has temporarily lifted all travel restrictions on his client, allowing him to leave Cyprus. These restrictions are set to be reinstated on September 15, when the 37-year-old is required to return to Cyprus to address the charges. Failure to do so would result in the issuance of a European arrest warrant, the lawyer clarified.

The court is scheduled to resume the proceedings on September 17. The family, who were vacationing in the southwestern resort town of Paphos, had only been in Cyprus for a few days when the unfortunate incident occurred, resulting in the boy falling from a fourth-floor hotel window. The details surrounding the fall remain under investigation.

Following the incident, the father was detained and subsequently released under specific conditions. He was required to surrender his passport, report weekly to a local police station, and post a bond of 20,000 euros (approximately $23,015).

The defendant’s wife and their other son, aged 5, returned to the UK last week. Alexandrou, who recently took over the defense, stated that he requires additional time to review the evidence, which has yet to be provided by the prosecution.
