Man Charged in Actor James Handy’s Stabbing Ruled Mentally Incompetent
A Los Angeles court has determined that Michael Gledhill, accused of murdering actor James Handy, lacks the mental competence necessary for trial. Judge Maria Cavalluzzi concluded that the 44-year-old cannot comprehend the legal proceedings or engage with his defense counsel effectively.
James Handy, known for roles in films such as “Jumanji” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” was discovered with stab wounds outside the residence of Gledhill’s mother on June 3. Handy, aged 81, was declared dead after being transported to a hospital.
Authorities arrested Gledhill after he reportedly identified himself to the police, stating, “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.” Despite these admissions, Gledhill has not yet entered a plea or participated in court proceedings. His initial arraignment on June 5 was postponed pending a mental health evaluation.
The mental health court, following psychiatric assessments, swiftly ruled Gledhill incompetent. In a recent hearing, Judge Cavalluzzi authorized involuntary medication for Gledhill for up to one year, based on a psychiatrist’s advice that medication could significantly improve his mental state.
A hearing on Gledhill’s potential long-term care is scheduled for July 14. Should his mental competence be restored, the case will proceed to trial.
Attempts to reach the attorneys involved for comments were unsuccessful. According to Brian Delate, a close friend of Handy, Gledhill’s mother had arranged for her son to live in her garage, while Handy, although maintaining his own home, frequently visited. Handy had reportedly mentioned Gledhill’s mental health challenges to Delate.
James Handy, a prolific character actor, was featured in numerous films and television series over the decades. He was recognized for his portrayal of an exterminator in “Jumanji” (1995) and as Jimmy the bartender in “Top Gun: Maverick” (2022). His extensive TV credits include appearances on “NCIS: Los Angeles,” “The Closer,” and “Cold Case.”
