Political Actions Under Scrutiny: John James’ Connections Explored

A political action committee linked to Republican Representative John James has come under examination after hiring consultants previously accused of facilitating an illegal arrangement between former President Donald Trump and the National Rifle Association (NRA).

The consultants were already embroiled in controversy before being hired by James’ committee, which raises questions about his commitment to fighting corruption if elected as Michigan governor later this year.

The intricacies of this situation involve multiple Republican consulting firms, opaque shell companies, and campaign finance records.

Recently, Mission Michigan PAC, associated with James, reported disbursing $1.3 million to Red Eagle Media Group, a Virginia-based company specializing in TV and radio ad placements for campaigns.

In the 2016 election cycle, the NRA engaged Red Eagle Media Group to run ads in Norfolk, Virginia, endorsing Trump. Coincidentally, Trump’s campaign utilized American Media & Advocacy Group (AMAG) to place ads in the same region and target demographic, adults aged 35 to 65.

Investigations by The Trace in 2018 revealed that both Red Eagle Media Group and AMAG are branches of National Media Research, Planning and Placement, as evidenced by shared addresses and personnel.

Additionally, both ad campaigns were authorized by the same person, leading to speculation that Red Eagle Media Group may have facilitated coordination between the Trump campaign and the NRA, which is a violation of federal law prohibiting private political entities from collaborating with campaigns.

According to Larry Noble, former general counsel for the Federal Election Commission, as reported by Mother Jones, “This is very strong evidence, if not proof, of illegal coordination.”

In 2020, Trump’s campaign again engaged AMAG but stopped transparent payment disclosures when the controversy emerged. OpenSecrets later revealed that the campaign continued working with AMAG through intermediary shell companies, possibly to obscure financial trails.

John James, who prioritizes tackling political corruption on his campaign platform, states on his website a commitment to “require ethics clauses to be included in every employment agreement in his administration.” However, this standard does not seem to extend to his political action committee’s operations.

James is among five Republican contenders in the upcoming primary on August 4, seeking to challenge Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson in the subsequent general election.
