Judge Halts Renovation Plans at Kennedy Center, Trump Criticizes Decision

President Donald Trump has voiced strong objections following a recent court decision that halted his proposed renovations of the Kennedy Center. The decision came from U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper, who also ruled to remove Trump’s name from the center. In response, President Trump referred to Cooper as an “anti Trump Hater” on his Truth Social platform, expressing frustration over what he perceives as a pattern of unfair treatment in legal matters, including previous losses like the Supreme Court’s dismissal of his tariff policies.

Trump had planned to close the Kennedy Center for a two-year overhaul, but following the ruling, he announced his intention to withdraw from the project and transfer control to Congress. This decision has been welcomed by artists and audience members who were concerned about the center’s future under Trump’s leadership, according to Norm Eisen, a former White House ethics lawyer involved in litigation against the renovation plans.

Cancellations and Controversies

The controversy surrounding the Kennedy Center is part of a broader context, as Trump also addressed musicians withdrawing from a celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary. “Cancel it,” Trump urged, likening it to his disengagement from the Kennedy Center, which he described as “failing and unsafe.” The White House has yet to clarify if Trump will continue as the center’s board chairman.

Judge Cooper criticized the board’s decision to close the venue, describing it as “ill-informed and seemingly preordained.” The board’s vote, cast on March 16, was accused of disregarding its legal responsibilities. The renovation, originally set to commence in July and span two years, is now on hold.

Legal and Political Tensions

Trump questioned the impartiality of the court, pointing to connections between Cooper and his wife, Amy Jeffress, a lawyer who once served under Attorney General Eric Holder during the Obama administration. Trump highlighted Jeffress’ affiliation with a law firm representing President Joe Biden in a lawsuit against the Department of Justice. The firm also represented E. Jean Carroll in her successful lawsuits against Trump for sexual abuse and defamation.

Cooper’s ruling emphasized that the Kennedy Center’s name, established by Congress, cannot be altered without congressional approval. He instructed that Trump’s name be removed within two weeks. The judge also found fault with the board’s decision to add Trump’s name to the center, asserting it overstepped its authority.

Trump has defended the naming decision, attributing it to the board’s initiative rather than his own. He argued that the inclusion of his name was intended to revitalize the institution. Following his return to office in January 2025, Trump had replaced the center’s leadership with a board that appointed him as chairman.

In April, Cooper conducted hearings for lawsuits challenging the Kennedy Center project. One was filed by cultural and historic preservation organizations, while another was led by Rep. Joyce Beatty. The judge ruled in favor of Beatty’s challenge but dismissed the other lawsuit.
