Campaign Donations Linked to Epstein Stir Controversy for Rep. Nick LaLota
New York’s 1st Congressional District Representative, Republican Nick LaLota, has come under scrutiny after it was revealed that he received $40,000 in campaign contributions from individuals associated with the late Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender.
These donations, detailed in LaLota’s latest Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings, connect back to the infamous Epstein files. This collection of documents was amassed by the Justice Department through a comprehensive probe into human trafficking and indicates continued relationships between the donors and Epstein post his 2008 conviction.
A significant portion of the contributions came from billionaire Leonard Blavatnik and his wife, Emily, who donated $12,000 to LaLota between March and October 2025. Blavatnik’s past involvement with Epstein includes attending a 2010 party at Epstein’s invitation and hosting a lunch at the Cannes Film Festival in 2012 where Epstein was present alongside film producer Harvey Weinstein.
While many identities in the Epstein files are redacted to protect victims and ongoing investigations, notable names such as President Donald Trump have reportedly been obscured.
Additionally, an email from 2018 addressed to Epstein from an unnamed individual mentioned Blavatnik, prompting Epstein to respond, “Call me.” Another redacted testimony from 2012 accused billionaire Leon Black of rape, an incident allegedly reported to Blavatnik, who advised the victim to leave New York for her safety.
Neither Blavatnik nor businessman Ronald Lauder, who donated $7,000 to LaLota in December 2025, have commented publicly on their ties to Epstein. Lauder’s name appears 443 times in the Epstein files, and he was involved in a business venture with Epstein and Leon Black concerning a $25 million artwork.
LaLota also received $7,000 from Anthony Ressler, owner of the Atlanta Hawks, in October 2025. Ressler is related to Black through marriage. In 2014, Paul Morris, Epstein’s financial manager, emailed Epstein regarding Ressler’s potential purchase of the Los Angeles Clippers, but Epstein did not reply.
Further communications in 2017 from Epstein to attorney Brad Karp, who later resigned from his firm due to his Epstein connections, included mentions of Ressler. However, the email’s context remains unclear.
Hedge fund manager John Paulson contributed $7,000 to LaLota in March 2025. Paulson had a history of meetings with Epstein and solicited a donation from him for a dinner in honor of Howard Lutnick, who later faced his own Epstein-related scandal.
Lutnick, now Commerce Secretary, once claimed to have distanced himself from Epstein after 2008, yet records show a 2012 visit to Epstein’s private island. Lutnick, who donated $3,300 to LaLota in 2024, has been criticized for his past interactions with Epstein.
Despite the controversy, LaLota supported the resolution to publicize the Epstein files, a measure that passed with near-unanimous support in Congress. It’s important to note that being named in the files does not imply illicit activity.
As LaLota campaigns for a third term, his Democratic challenger will emerge from an upcoming primary on June 23.
