Kurt Alme’s Senate Candidacy Under Scrutiny Due to Past Ties
Republican candidate Kurt Alme, who is running for a U.S. Senate seat in Montana, is facing scrutiny due to previous associations with an organization implicated in a sexual abuse case involving a minor.
Alme served as the general counsel of the Yellowstone Boys & Girls Foundation starting in 2010, eventually becoming its president in 2013. The foundation is the fundraising branch for the Yellowstone Boys & Girls Ranch located in Billings, which provides therapeutic and residential care for at-risk youth. Although not explicitly a Christian organization, the Ranch emphasizes a faith-based treatment approach on its website.
In 2018, a lawsuit was filed against the Yellowstone Boys & Girls Ranch by the mother of a child who alleged sexual abuse by other youth at the facility between 2013 and 2014. The victim, who was 10 years old at the time, claimed that he informed staff about the incidents, but was not believed and was sent back to bed. The lawsuit accused the ranch of negligence and insufficient supervision.
A jury ruled in favor of the victim, awarding his family $300,000 in damages, although the ranch has denied any wrongdoing.
Alme’s political career includes serving as the U.S. Attorney for the District of Montana from 2017 to 2020 and resuming the role from 2025 to 2026. He formally declared his Senate candidacy earlier this month for the seat currently held by retiring Republican Sen. Steve Daines.
The timing of Alme’s entry into the race coincided with Daines’ retirement announcement, prompting speculation about possible coordination to limit competition. Alme’s campaign has secured endorsements from both Daines and former President Donald Trump.
