Vanderbilt Commodores Dominate High Point in NCAA Tournament Opener

The Vanderbilt Commodores, led by All-American Mikayla Blakes, delivered a commanding performance against High Point with a 102-61 victory in the women’s NCAA Tournament. Blakes, who is the nation’s scoring leader, was instrumental in the win, contributing 30 points with 23 of those coming in the first half. Vanderbilt’s strong start gave them a 54-32 lead by halftime.

Vanderbilt, now boasting a 28-4 record, continues its undefeated streak at home this season. The team will face either Illinois or Colorado in the next round, aiming for a spot in the Sweet 16 of the Fort Worth 1 Region.

Team Contributions and Record Achievements

Sacha Washington’s performance was notable with 10 points and 17 rebounds, tying the program’s NCAA tournament record set by Karen Booker in 1987. Aubrey Galvan added 17 points, and Ndjakalenga Mwenentanda contributed 10, with 11 players from Vanderbilt scoring in the game.

This victory marked the highest score in an NCAA tournament game for Vanderbilt. Coach Shea Ralph highlighted the importance of this achievement, emphasizing the team’s energy and commitment to honoring their home fans.

High Point’s Efforts and Challenges

High Point, entering the tournament with a 27-6 record, won both the Big South’s regular-season and tournament titles. Macy Spencer, a transfer from UNLV, was the standout player for High Point, scoring 22 of her 27 points in the first half.

High Point coach Chelsea Banbury acknowledged the difficulty of facing a strong Vanderbilt team, stating, “Man, we definitely played a really good team tonight. Vandy’s a tough group to defend.” Despite the loss, Banbury expressed pride in her team’s effort and competitive spirit throughout the game.

Game Dynamics and Tactical Play

Vanderbilt demonstrated tactical superiority, opening the game with a 16-3 run. Blakes commented on the team’s determination to defend their home court and validate their seeding, saying, “I feel like we came out wanting to defend our home court and prove to everybody that we deserved the seed that we had …”

The Commodores capitalized on their strength in the paint, outscoring High Point 46-30, and dominated the boards with a 56-26 rebounding advantage.
