Baltimore Federal Court Orders Mental Evaluation for Zizians Leader

A federal judge in Baltimore has ordered a competency evaluation for Jack LaSota, leader of the Zizians group, linked to multiple deaths. LaSota, a transgender woman known as “Ziz,” faces a federal gun charge, but her attorney argues she may be mentally incompetent for trial. This move shifts the focus from a planned evidence suppression hearing regarding LaSota’s previous arrest in Frostburg, Maryland.

U.S. District Court Judge James Bredar approved the evaluation request, leading to LaSota remaining in federal custody until the exam is complete. This development could affect her upcoming state trial scheduled for June in western Maryland.

Attorney Gary Proctor stated, “Counsel believes there is reasonable cause to believe that the defendant is presently suffering from a mental disease or defect rendering her mentally incompetent to the extent that she is unable to understand the nature and consequences of the proceedings.”

At the hearing, Proctor explained that LaSota’s behavior, including equating being a fugitive with being transgender and accusing a judge of criminal activity, indicated potential mental issues. However, LaSota countered in court, asserting previous claims of her competence and asking the judge to consider the full court record.

Judge Bredar assured LaSota, “I will take your viewpoint into account. I promise you.”

Authorities describe LaSota as the leader of the Zizians, a group of young computer scientists involved in radical veganism, animal rights, gender identity, and AI ideologies. Since 2022, members have been connected to deaths, including a landlord in California, and shootings in Pennsylvania and Vermont.

LaSota, along with Michelle Zajko and Daniel Blank, was arrested last February after being discovered living in box trucks in Maryland. Though not charged with the deaths, their arrests have linked them to broader homicide investigations.

Maryland State Trooper Brandon Jeffries noted the suspects should be questioned about other crimes tied to the Zizians group.

Facing state charges of trespassing and illegal gun and drug possession, LaSota also confronts a federal charge of illegal gun possession as a fugitive, and obstruction related to Zajko’s parents’ deaths. Authorities regard Zajko as a person of interest in that case, with Blank under investigation.

In a court filing, LaSota’s lawyers stated, “Ms. LaSota eschews the term Zizian and denies any and all allegations that she and her friends have formed a cult.”

Defense attorneys Proctor and Jennifer Smith argue that LaSota’s Fourth Amendment rights were violated, asserting police illegally searched the box trucks without a warrant and that the trespassing charge is invalid as the landowner permitted their stay until the following day.

Prosecutors argue that police had probable cause for the arrest and justified the search as a protective measure, citing safety concerns due to the group’s violent reputation.
