Studies Reveal Mike Lawler’s Consistent Support for Trump’s Agenda

Two studies from CAP Action and VoteHub reveal New York Rep. Mike Lawler's full support for Trump's 2025 agenda, challenging his moderate claims amid rising partisanship and his upcoming reelection in a swing district.
Is Mike Lawler a moderate? Two separate studies say no.

Studies Challenge Rep. Mike Lawler’s Claims of Bipartisanship

Recent analyses reveal that New York Representative Mike Lawler consistently aligned with former President Donald Trump’s policies in 2025, casting doubt on his assertions of being a bipartisan leader.

According to reports from the progressive think tank CAP Action and the nonpartisan media company VoteHub, Lawler voted in favor of Trump’s administration on every occasion where the White House had a clear stance. These findings are based on an examination of legislative votes from 2025.

Lawler’s voting record includes support for contentious bills such as the Rescissions Act, which reduced federal funding for foreign aid and public broadcasting, and the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which is expected to result in 7.8 million individuals losing Medicaid coverage by 2034.

Despite these findings, Lawler often portrays himself as a moderate. He represents New York’s 17th District, known for voting for both Democratic and Republican presidential candidates. His campaign website highlights his “bipartisan, pragmatic approach to governing” as a key reason for his electoral successes in the region.

In contrast, Lawler has openly criticized fellow Republicans like former Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, stating in a C-SPAN interview that her lack of accomplishments in Congress stemmed from her “inability to work across party lines.” However, the CAP Action and VoteHub studies indicate that Greene’s support for Trump and the GOP agenda was less frequent than Lawler’s.

Further analysis by VoteView shows an increase in Lawler’s party-line voting, from 81% between 2023 and 2024 to 92% since 2025, suggesting a shift towards more partisan behavior following Trump’s return to power.

As Lawler seeks a third term, Democrats have listed him as one of the more vulnerable House Republicans in the upcoming election cycle.
