Nick Reiner Pleads Not Guilty in the Murder Case of His Parents

In a high-profile case unfolding in Los Angeles, Nick Reiner, the son of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner, has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder. The 32-year-old entered his plea in a crowded courtroom, as he stood behind glass in a secured area.

Represented by Deputy Public Defender Kimberly Greene, Reiner denied accusations of fatally stabbing his parents, who were discovered deceased at their Brentwood home on December 14. He has been detained without bail since his arrest on the same day. During his court appearance, Reiner, donned in brown jail attire, communicated briefly with his lawyer before the proceedings began.

Reiner’s plea comes after several delays in the case, attributed to a change in defense attorneys and other complexities. Initially represented by Alan Jackson, a prominent private attorney, Reiner’s defense saw a change due to undisclosed ethical reasons. Jackson had previously asserted, “pursuant to the laws of California, Nick Reiner is not guilty of murder.”

The courtroom drama is set to continue, with Reiner scheduled to return on April 29. At this future hearing, evidence will be presented to determine whether the case proceeds to trial. The case will now be presided over by Judge Sam Ohta, known for handling significant cases in Los Angeles but none with the level of national media scrutiny this one has attracted.

District Attorney Nathan Hochman has stated that a decision on pursuing the death penalty is still under consideration, pending a thorough review of all circumstances surrounding the case. “We will be looking at all aggravating and mitigating circumstances,” Hochman noted.

Details remain scarce as authorities have not disclosed potential motives behind the killings, and a court order has sealed additional information. Initial findings from the LA County Medical Examiner indicated that Rob and Michele Singer Reiner succumbed to “multiple sharp force injuries.”

Deputy District Attorney Habib Balian mentioned that while the full autopsy report is pending, other evidence has been made available to the defense team.

Rob Reiner, aged 78, was a celebrated director known for iconic films such as “This is Spinal Tap,” “Stand By Me,” and “A Few Good Men.” He met Michele Singer during the production of “When Harry Met Sally…” and the couple had been married for 36 years.
