Trump’s $10 Billion Lawsuit Against BBC Set for 2027 Trial

The legal battle between former U.S. President Donald Trump and the BBC is moving forward, with a trial tentatively scheduled for February 15, 2027. This decision comes after Judge Roy K. Altman of the federal court in the Southern District of Florida dismissed the BBC’s request to delay the proceedings.

Trump initiated the lawsuit in December, seeking $10 billion in damages. The claim is based on allegations of defamation and unfair trade practices, following the BBC’s editing of a speech Trump delivered on January 6, 2021. The controversial edits were featured in a documentary titled “Trump: A Second Chance?” which aired shortly before the 2024 U.S. presidential election. The edits combined separate excerpts of Trump’s speech to suggest he incited supporters to “fight like hell,” omitting a part where he called for peaceful demonstrations.

The misrepresentation has led to significant repercussions, including apologies from the BBC and the resignation of senior executives. Despite the apology, the broadcaster denies any defamation claims.

In recent court filings, the BBC expressed intentions to file for dismissal, citing jurisdictional issues since the program was not aired in Florida and arguing that Trump’s claims are unfounded. They also sought to delay the discovery phase until the dismissal motion is resolved. However, Judge Altman ruled this request as “premature.”

The BBC remains firm in its stance, stating, “we will be defending this case. We are not going to make further comment on ongoing legal proceedings.”
