Iowa Representative Zach Nunn’s Controversial Stance on the Affordable Care Act
In a significant political move, Iowa Representative Zach Nunn voted to reinstate tax credits under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), commonly known as Obamacare. Despite this action, Nunn has reiterated his long-term objective to dismantle the healthcare program entirely.
Since the expiration of these credits on January 1, more than 126,000 Iowa residents have experienced increased insurance premiums. Nunn, along with 16 other House Republicans who are facing tough reelection campaigns, supported a Democratic proposal to extend the credits for an additional three years.
During a GOP meeting in Urbandale on January 28, Nunn stated, “Let me be very clear, I’m not in favor of the ACA going forward. I want the ACA gone as much as any of you. But I’m not going to leave 126,000 Iowans to wait for Congress to get its job done.” He also mentioned that Republicans have legislation ready to “immediately end” Obamacare.
The House passed the bill to extend these tax credits on January 8 with 230 votes. However, its future remains uncertain in the Republican-controlled Senate. Nationwide, approximately 22 million Americans could face the dilemma of choosing between higher premiums, less coverage, or losing insurance altogether.
This situation follows last year’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBB), which is set to cut up to $1 trillion from Medicaid over a decade. As a result, an estimated 15 million Americans might lose their health insurance by 2035, with the savings primarily funding tax breaks for wealthy individuals and large corporations. Nunn supported the OBBB and publicly promoted the law in television advertisements.
Unrig Our Economy, an advocacy group for working-class interests, criticized Nunn’s stance on Obamacare. Leor Tal, the group’s director, stated, “Nunn and his Republican colleagues voted for the largest cuts to health care in history in order to give more tax breaks to billionaires. Now, they’re doubling down on attacking Americans’ care by trying to dismantle the ACA. Americans don’t need higher costs and more barriers to coverage, they need Republicans in Congress to stop voting to take away their health care.”
Public opinion appears to align with this critique. A tracking poll by KFF in January 2026 showed that the ACA holds a 58% approval rating.
Zach Nunn is currently campaigning for a third term. The Democratic Party has identified him as one of the most vulnerable Republicans in the upcoming congressional elections.
