Lawler’s Fundraising Efforts for Anti-Abortion Group Raise Campaign Questions
New York Representative Mike Lawler recently participated in a fundraising event for an anti-abortion organization, which some argue contradicts his previous campaign commitment to adopt a “mainstream position” on reproductive rights.
On October 20, Lawler shared images from the 39th Annual Love Life Fundraising Banquet on his social media platforms. The event supported the Care Net Pregnancy Center of Rockland, located within his congressional area.
These centers, often referred to as crisis pregnancy centers, aim to deter women from seeking abortions. Critics claim that such centers mislead women by presenting themselves as legitimate healthcare providers, often using medical disinformation.
Planned Parenthood reports, “Most anti-abortion crisis pregnancy centers are not licensed as medical clinics. Workers and volunteers often give the impression of being medical providers by wearing white coats, talking to clients in a private area with an examination table, and collecting health information; however, they often have no medical training.”
Lawler also attended a similar fundraiser in October 2023, where he was photographed alongside the center’s executive director.
A few months following the event, Lawler voted in favor of the Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act. This act aimed to restrict states from limiting federal funding to pregnancy centers. Although it passed the House, it was stalled in the Senate.
In his 2024 campaign, Lawler highlighted his “mainstream position” on abortion rights on his website, promising to “ensure access to contraception.”
However, the Care Net Pregnancy Center of Rockland’s website includes content that criticizes emergency contraception, or Plan B, labeling it an “abortifacient.” This characterization is largely disputed by the medical community.
The Love Life group, which organized the banquet, has actively advocated for defunding Planned Parenthood, an organization that provides various healthcare services, including affordable contraception.
As Lawler seeks a third term next year, abortion remains a contentious topic in his campaign. DCCC spokesperson Riya Vashi remarked, “Mike Lawler has spent his entire career attacking reproductive freedom. Lawler can’t hide the reality of his anti-choice extremism, and it won’t bode well for him come 2026.”
