Virginia’s residents face significant impacts from the policies enacted by President Donald Trump and his administration. These include the potential dismissal of thousands of federal workers, a $26 billion cut to Medicaid, and threats to the state’s leading universities.
Dogwood spoke with Abigail Spanberger, a former CIA officer and two-term congresswoman, about her plans to address these challenges if elected governor on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
Addressing Health Insurance Concerns
Spanberger criticized Trump’s proposal to revoke health insurance for 350,000 Virginians, stating, “The reality is that people across the board—hospital folks, associations, and doctors—have outlined the dire nature of this bill.” She emphasized the need to improve Medicaid enrollment systems to minimize the impact on Virginians.
Challenges Facing Rural Hospitals
The “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” signed by Trump could cause Virginia to lose $26 billion in hospital funding. Spanberger detailed how this has already led to clinic closures and risks for rural hospitals. She questioned her opponent’s suggestion to use the $4.7 billion “rainy day fund” to cover the gap, stating it is insufficient and intended for emergencies.
Affordable Housing Solutions
Spanberger highlighted affordability as a major concern, particularly in housing. She noted that while state-level action on grocery prices is limited, there is potential to streamline regulations that hinder housing development. She also stressed the importance of preserving existing affordable housing.
Defending Public Schools
Spanberger opposes defunding public education through vouchers, a stance taken by her opponent. She argued that public schools are vital for many families and that investment in education strengthens communities and the economy.
Energy Cost Management
With energy costs rising, Spanberger pointed to the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind Project as a key initiative for more affordable energy. She pledged to protect this project from federal interference, ensuring it contributes to Virginia’s energy supply by 2026.
Protecting Virginia’s Universities
Spanberger expressed concern over the Department of Justice’s actions against institutions like UVA, viewing them as attacks on academic freedom and economic drivers. She criticized the silence of state leaders on these issues.
Views on Federal Force in Cities
Spanberger condemned the use of federal agents in cities like Washington, D.C., suggesting it detracts from the FBI’s primary missions. She called for local police to handle city policing, focusing federal efforts on terrorism and major crimes.
