Ohio Man Sentenced for Assaulting Officer During Capitol Riot

WASHINGTON – An Ohio resident received a prison sentence on October 31, 2024, after pleading guilty to a felony for assaulting law enforcement during the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. The events, including those involving the Ohio man, disrupted the joint session of Congress that was in progress to certify the electoral votes from the 2020 presidential election.

Details of the Sentencing

Kyle Andrew Campbell, 31, from Columbus, Ohio, was sentenced to four months in prison followed by four months of home confinement. Additionally, he will serve 36 months of supervised release and pay $2,000 in restitution. U.S. District Judge Randolph D. Moss delivered the sentence. Campbell’s guilty plea to the felony charge of assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers was entered on July 1, 2024.

Events of January 6, 2021

According to court records, Campbell traveled from Columbus, Ohio, to Washington, D.C., on January 6, 2021, to attend the “Stop the Steal” rally. He and a companion joined a large crowd moving towards the U.S. Capitol. Campbell breached the fencing set up by U.S. Capitol Police, marking the restricted perimeter, and proceeded to the West Plaza’s southern area.

There, he confronted U.S. Capitol Police officers alongside a mob. After being pushed into an officer with a riot shield, Campbell, using his own force, charged at the officer, striking both him and the shield multiple times before retreating. He stayed in the West Plaza for over an hour and later moved to the Upper West Terrace, knowingly remaining in an unauthorized area.

Arrest and Prosecution

The FBI arrested Campbell on December 11, 2023. The case was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, in collaboration with the Department of Justice National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section and with assistance from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Ohio.

Investigation and Identification

The investigation was conducted by the FBI’s Cincinnati and Washington Field Offices. Campbell was listed as BOLO (Be on the Lookout) #521 in the FBI’s search for information photographs. The U.S. Capitol Police and the Metropolitan Police Department offered valuable aid during the investigation.

In the 45 months following the January 6, 2021, incident, over 1,532 individuals across nearly all 50 states have faced charges for crimes related to the Capitol breach. This includes more than 571 individuals charged with felony offenses of assaulting or impeding law enforcement. The investigation remains ongoing.
