Pakistani Court Sentences Man to Death for Murder of Teen Influencer

A court in Islamabad has sentenced Umar Hayat to death for the murder of 17-year-old social media influencer, Sana Yousuf. The decision was announced by Judge Muhammad Afzal Majoka on Tuesday. Hayat was apprehended in June following the tragic incident that took place outside Yousuf’s home after she declined his friendship offer.

Hayat, aged 22, was identified and arrested by law enforcement after reviewing CCTV footage. The footage captured Hayat leaving the vicinity of Yousuf’s residence shortly after the shooting took place. Hayat is also noted for his presence on TikTok, a platform where Yousuf had gained significant popularity.

The murder of Yousuf, who originally hailed from Chitral, triggered widespread condemnation across the nation. Known for her promotion of traditional Chitrali music and attire, Yousuf also used her platform to advocate for girls’ education in Pakistan. Her influence extended to hundreds of thousands of followers on TikTok, many of whom began following her account posthumously.

On the day she was killed, Yousuf had shared a photo celebrating her birthday with friends, highlighting the tragic timing of her death. Following the court’s verdict, her family expressed satisfaction, stating that justice has been achieved.
