Former Northern Ireland Unionist Leader Faces Serious Charges

In a trial that commenced Wednesday, former Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) leader Jeffrey Donaldson is accused of sexually abusing two girls over a period spanning from 1985 to 2008, as presented by the prosecution in Newry Crown Court.

Donaldson, aged 63, has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including one count of rape, four counts of gross indecency, and 13 counts of indecent assault. The allegations involve two victims who reported their experiences to the police over two years ago, describing the incidents as “difficult and traumatic,” according to prosecutor Rosemary Walsh.

Donaldson stepped down from his role as DUP leader and resigned as a lawmaker in the UK Parliament following his arrest in March 2024. His sudden departure surprised many within the DUP, just as the party had recently resumed participation in Northern Ireland’s semiautonomous government after reaching agreements on post-Brexit trade arrangements with the EU.

Leading the DUP from 2021 to 2023, Donaldson was a prominent figure advocating for Northern Ireland’s continued union with the United Kingdom. However, his leadership came to an abrupt end with these allegations.

The prosecution detailed that Donaldson allegedly groped the victims, who were around primary school age at the time. Complainant B, the older of the two alleged victims, stated that the abuse persisted over several years. Walsh further revealed that Complainant B recounted a meeting facilitated by a church where Donaldson reportedly apologized “for what had happened in the past.”

Donaldson, during police questioning, described the accusations as “unbelievable.” Meanwhile, his wife, Eleanor Donaldson, faces charges of aiding and abetting, though she is not present in court. Judge Paul Ramsey has deemed her unfit for trial due to mental health issues. Jurors will review the facts of her case, but she cannot be convicted or penalized as a result.

The proceedings are expected to continue for up to a month as the court examines the evidence presented against Donaldson.
