Cleveland Cavaliers Triumph Over Toronto Raptors, Advance to Eastern Conference Semifinals

Jarrett Allen’s standout performance led the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 114-102 victory against the Toronto Raptors in Game 7, propelling them to the Eastern Conference semifinals. Allen matched his playoff career high, contributing 22 points and securing 19 rebounds in a decisive game held on Sunday night.

Both Donovan Mitchell and James Harden were pivotal, with Mitchell also scoring 22 points. The Cavaliers emerged victorious in a series where each game was won by the home team. As the fourth seed, Cleveland is set to face the top-seeded Detroit Pistons on Tuesday in the next round, having split their regular-season encounters.

“I think we’ve already moved on (to focusing on Detroit),” Mitchell remarked post-game, emphasizing the team’s swift transition to the upcoming challenge. The Raptors, returning to the playoffs after a hiatus since 2022, saw Scottie Barnes lead with 24 points and 9 rebounds, while RJ Barrett contributed 23 points.

Missing from the Raptors’ lineup was All-Star forward Brandon Ingram, sidelined due to a bruised right heel. Despite the setback, Raptors coach Darko Rajakovic praised his team’s effort, stating, “We gave it all, everything we had today. Our guys were awesome. We made it hard on them.”

During a crucial period across the second and third quarters, Allen’s remarkable play was instrumental. He recorded 14 points and 10 rebounds, five being offensive, as Cleveland overturned a nine-point deficit into a commanding 19-point lead. A highlight was Allen’s fast-break dunk, following a steal by Max Strus, widening the gap to 74-59.

The Cavaliers excelled during this phase, shooting 17 of 33 from the field with five three-pointers. They capitalized on Toronto’s errors, converting seven turnovers into 14 points, while the Raptors struggled, shooting 6 of 23 overall and 1 of 8 from three-point range. Cleveland also dominated the boards, boasting a 25-8 rebounding advantage during the run, translating 10 offensive rebounds into 14 points.

Reflecting on the game’s dynamics, Barnes noted, “They were scoring in transition, getting some offensive rebounds. That really hurt us, giving them momentum.” Initially, Toronto maintained a lead, peaking with a 10-point advantage in the second quarter. However, Cleveland rallied with an 11-2 run to tie the game at halftime.

Before the Cavaliers’ comeback, they faced challenges from beyond the arc, hitting only 4 of 17 three-pointers. Yet, pivotal shots from Harden, Strus, and Jaylon Tyson helped close the gap. In a key moment, Allen noted, “Sam (Merrill) said this whole series, we haven’t closed out the second quarter. We all took that to heart.” Allen’s double-double marked his 11th in playoff games, highlighting the team’s resolve and strategic adjustments.

Cleveland seized control with a nine-point streak at the start of the third quarter, with Mitchell and Mobley contributing key points. Coach Kenny Atkinson reflected on the team’s approach, saying, “In the first half, we were forcing it too much… Sometimes you have to move the defense. We just kept hammering that message.”

Historically, the Cavaliers hold a 6-5 record in Game 7s, remaining undefeated at home, while the Raptors have a 3-4 record, struggling on the road. For more NBA updates, visit the AP NBA hub.
