In a personal and poignant narrative, Beth Osborne, a Las Vegas writer and activist, shares her teenage experience of undergoing an abortion and her current advocacy efforts in Nevada. As a high school senior in Miller’s Creek, North Carolina, Beth found herself in a challenging situation, dating an older, controlling boyfriend and facing an unexpected pregnancy.

Despite being informed about birth control, the reality of her situation hit when she missed her period and subsequent pregnancy test confirmed her fears. Determined to prioritize her education and future, Beth chose to have an abortion, a decision complicated by North Carolina’s requirement for parental consent for minors.

‘Protesters told me I was going to hell’

Faced with legal barriers, Beth sought judicial intervention to waive the parental consent requirement, citing her mother’s terminal illness as a reason for not wanting to burden her with the news. However, her request was denied, forcing her to wait until her 18th birthday to legally proceed with the abortion.

On the day of her procedure, Beth encountered anti-abortion protesters, but remained resolute in her decision. Reflecting on her choice, she asserts it was the best decision for her circumstances, allowing her to pursue higher education without the constraints of an unplanned pregnancy.

Advocating for Question 6 in Nevada

Currently residing in Nevada, Beth is actively campaigning for the passage of Question 6, a ballot initiative aiming to enshrine the right to abortion in the Nevada Constitution. Her involvement with organizations like Planned Parenthood and Indivisible highlights her commitment to preserving reproductive rights amid shifting national landscapes.

The initiative comes in response to the 2022 Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade, which has spurred efforts to secure abortion rights at the state level. Question 6 seeks to ensure that future generations in Nevada retain access to safe and legal abortion services.

‘I’ve never regretted my decision’

Reflecting on her life’s journey, Beth credits her ability to pursue a university education and escape an abusive relationship to her decision to have an abortion. Despite facing health challenges, including a rare ovarian cancer diagnosis, Beth remains steadfast in her stance on reproductive autonomy.

Her experiences underscore the importance of personal choice and highlight the societal expectations of motherhood that women often face. Beth’s story is a testament to the complexities surrounding reproductive decisions and the need for legislative protections.

Societal expectations of motherhood

Throughout her medical journey, Beth faced societal pressures regarding motherhood, with medical professionals frequently suggesting fertility preservation options. However, she emphasizes her focus on survival and living life on her own terms.

Rejecting societal judgments, Beth advocates for individualized reproductive choices free from government interference, asserting that such decisions should rest solely between women and their healthcare providers.

Pushing back against abortion shame and stigma

Determined to combat abortion stigma, Beth actively engages with community organizations to encourage voter support for Question 6. Her advocacy is driven by a desire to ensure reproductive rights are constitutionally protected in Nevada, standing against potential federal restrictions.

Through her work with Indivisible and other groups, Beth has found a supportive community that has been instrumental in her personal and activist endeavors. Sharing her story publicly, she aims to inspire others to embrace their reproductive choices without shame.

With impending political challenges to abortion access, Beth’s efforts highlight the critical need for constitutional safeguards to uphold reproductive freedoms in Nevada.
