Violence Erupts in Pakistan-Administered Kashmir Amid Political Tensions
In a significant escalation of tensions in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, clashes between law enforcement and followers of a banned political entity resulted in the death of one police officer, with several others sustaining injuries, according to official reports.
The unrest followed the reopening of roads by Pakistani authorities that members of the proscribed Joint Awami Action Committee had obstructed for almost a month. The blockade had led to severe disruptions, causing shortages of essential supplies like food and medicine, and limiting transportation, as noted in a police statement.
Chaudhry Guftar Hussain, the region’s home secretary, attributed the officer’s death to indiscriminate firing by armed members of the group.
Earlier on Tuesday, Hussain declared that security personnel would initiate a comprehensive operation throughout Pakistan-administered Kashmir to remove blockades at all entry and exit points established by the banned Jammu and Kashmir Awami Action Committee.
The Joint Awami Action Committee, which includes various groups, has been conducting sit-ins at several sites since last month. Their protest demands the removal of 12 reserved seats in the regional Legislative Assembly. These seats are allocated for refugees who fled Indian-controlled Kashmir decades ago.
The group’s stance is that these reserved seats unfairly benefit individuals residing outside the territory, skewing political power. Tensions intensified in early June following a Supreme Court decision that maintained the protection of these seats, ruling that they cannot be abolished without a constitutional amendment.
The reserved seats were established to represent those displaced by the longstanding conflict over Kashmir, a region claimed in full by both India and Pakistan. The two nuclear-armed nations have fought two out of their three wars over this disputed Himalayan territory since gaining independence from British rule in 1947.
