Michigan GOP Candidates Continue to Assert 2020 Election Fraud
In a recent event, two Republican contenders for the Michigan gubernatorial seat reiterated claims that the 2020 presidential election was wrongfully taken from former President Donald Trump. The assertions were made by Rep. John James and state Sen. Aric Nesbitt during a gathering on April 13, as reported by the Midland Daily News.
Both candidates accused Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson of bias, alleging she unduly influenced the election outcome in favor of President Joe Biden. Benson, a Democrat, is also vying for the governor’s position.
During the event, Nesbitt unequivocally stated, “Trump won Michigan” in the 2020 election. James, who contested for a U.S. Senate seat that year, suggested that the election was also rigged against him.
“Who here believes that Jocelyn Benson … screwed Trump in 2020?” asked James. “Who here believes the president won in 2020? All right, well, if you do, I outperformed President Trump in 2020, and there are five judges that agree with you that Jocelyn Benson had her thumb on the scale in 2020.”
Despite these claims, official results showed Biden winning Michigan by a margin of over 154,000 votes, while Sen. Gary Peters defeated James by 92,000 votes.
Trump has consistently alleged that his electoral defeat was due to unfair practices and significant voter fraud. These allegations have been dismissed through numerous legal challenges and independent evaluations.
Post-election, Trump criticized Benson, labeling her a “rogue Secretary of State” for her advocacy of mail-in voting. This led to armed Trump supporters protesting outside Benson’s residence, voicing threatening slogans.
In a message on X, Benson remarked, “The individuals gathered outside my home targeted me as Michigan’s chief election officer. But their threats were actually aimed at the 5.5 million Michigan citizens who voted in this fall’s election, seeking to overturn their will. They will not succeed in doing so.”
The GOP candidates, James and Nesbitt, will compete in the primary scheduled for August 4.
