Molotov Cocktail Attack on AI Executive’s Home
A Texas resident has been accused of attacking the home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in San Francisco with a Molotov cocktail. The individual, Daniel Moreno-Gama, 20, allegedly traveled with the intention to harm Altman due to his opposition to artificial intelligence, according to authorities.
The incident occurred around 4 a.m. on Friday when Moreno-Gama reportedly threw the incendiary device at Altman’s residence, igniting an exterior gate before fleeing on foot. Following this, he allegedly targeted OpenAI’s headquarters, threatening to set the building on fire.
Legal Proceedings and Charges
Moreno-Gama is facing multiple charges, including attempted murder and arson, in California state court. San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced that the charges could lead to a prison sentence ranging from 19 years to life. Additionally, federal charges for possession of an unregistered firearm and explosive-related property damage could result in a combined 30-year sentence.
Authorities apprehended Moreno-Gama, discovering incendiary devices, kerosene, and a document detailing his anti-AI views. FBI agents also searched his residence in Spring, Texas.
Opposition to Artificial Intelligence
Documents found on Moreno-Gama revealed his strong anti-AI views and threats against AI executives, including Altman. FBI surveillance footage purportedly shows Moreno-Gama executing the attack on Altman’s property.
At the OpenAI headquarters, Moreno-Gama allegedly attempted to break in, declaring his intent to destroy the premises and harm its occupants.
Response to the Incident
U.S. Attorney Craig Missakian labeled the act as domestic terrorism, vowing to prosecute to the fullest extent. Advocacy groups condemned the violence, emphasizing that such actions have no place in AI discourse. Anthony Aguirre of the Future of Life Institute stated, “Violence and intimidation of any kind have no place in the conversation about the future of AI.”
Altman addressed the threats in a blog post, underscoring the need for de-escalation in AI discussions and sharing a family photo to deter further attacks.
