Republican Push to Cut Obamacare Subsidies Faces Resistance

Wisconsin Representative Derrick Van Orden is a vocal advocate for dismantling the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare, which currently provides health insurance to approximately 45 million Americans.

With the year-end deadline approaching, Congress faces a decision on the future of subsidies that help families afford Obamacare. Democrats are in favor of extending these subsidies without conditions, whereas Republicans, including Van Orden, aim to cut them as part of a broader effort to dismantle the health program.

The subsidies in question were introduced under the 2021 American Rescue Plan, which was signed by President Joe Biden and did not receive any support from Republican lawmakers.

Van Orden has previously stated, “What we’re trying to do as Republicans here is make sure that we can lay out some very solid legislation that’s going to undo what the Democrats did,” in an interview with The Hill.

This stance aligns with his past remarks where he has labeled Obamacare a “failed program” and advocated for its complete repeal.

Recently, a Senate vote was blocked by Republicans, preventing a bill that aimed to extend the subsidies for an additional three years. The measure was supported by Wisconsin Democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin, while Republican Senator Ron Johnson opposed it.

In Wisconsin alone, approximately 300,000 residents benefit from these subsidies. Senator Baldwin has warned that their premiums could see a dramatic increase—potentially doubling or even quadrupling.

“We are in a time of great urgency, and really the only workable solution right now is to extend these tax breaks so that working families can afford their premiums,” Senator Baldwin commented to Wisconsin Public Radio.

Chrysa Ostenso from Ladysmith, WI, expressed concern to Spectrum News about her health insurance premiums, which are projected to increase by $1,500 monthly.

Ostenso stated, “Our health care system is not perfect, but letting these credits expire will make things worse, more expensive, more out of reach, and more dangerous.”

Public opinion data indicates a disconnect between Van Orden and the general voter base. A recent poll by KFF revealed that 84% of those enrolled in Obamacare favor extending the subsidies. Another KFF poll found that a majority of enrollees are likely to hold President Donald Trump and House Republicans accountable if premiums rise.

As a result, Van Orden is perceived as one of the most vulnerable Republican members in the upcoming House elections.
