MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — In the wake of a second fatal shooting by federal immigration agents, President Donald Trump appears to have shown some openness to reducing tensions in Minneapolis. However, tangible changes remain scarce amid escalating rhetoric and confrontations with demonstrators.
Trump’s approach was highlighted by a strategic leadership adjustment, as he dispatched his chief border adviser to Minnesota to oversee immigration enforcement efforts. His comments following calls with Democratic officials, including Governor Tim Walz and Mayor Jacob Frey, were notably more conciliatory, as he reported being “on a similar wavelength” with Walz and acknowledged progress after discussions with Frey.
Despite these developments, the situation on the ground in Minneapolis and St. Paul remained unchanged, with ongoing immigration operations and activist clashes. Protesters were seen identifying federal officers on a Minneapolis street, prompting a brief pursuit by activists.
Journalists from the Associated Press attempting to cover these events encountered resistance from federal officers, who pushed and threatened them despite their identification as media personnel. The officers’ actions included using pepper spray and detaining individuals, though it was unclear who was targeted specifically.
Attorney General Pam Bondi, visiting Minnesota, reported that 16 arrests had been made on charges including assault and resisting law enforcement, with more arrests anticipated. Bondi asserted on social media, “NOTHING will stop President Trump and this Department of Justice from enforcing the law.”
Community Voices and Concerns
Federal agents visited a Brooklyn Center residence seeking a man with prior deportations and a domestic abuse conviction. Although agents did not possess a judicial warrant, the neighborhood’s response was largely supportive of the residents in question.
Kari Rod, a local resident, expressed skepticism about the agents’ intentions, describing the neighbors as good people based on her interactions. “I don’t trust a single thing they said about who they are,” Rod stated.
Impact on Local Businesses and Immigrant Community
Daniel Hernandez, owner of the Minneapolis grocery store Colonial Market, noted the persistent fear among immigrant families, leading to the closure of numerous Latino businesses. “The reality is the community is still very worried and afraid,” Hernandez explained.
Hernandez also mentioned the recent reassignment of Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino, yet indicated that enforcement tactics remain unchanged.
Judicial Reactions and Legal Challenges
In a Minnesota federal court, Chief Judge Patrick Schiltz criticized ICE for violating numerous court orders, warning of potential consequences for continued noncompliance. Meanwhile, another judge issued a temporary restraining order against the detention of resettled refugees, sparking criticism from Deputy White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller.
Tributes and Community Gatherings
A vigil was held to honor Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse killed by immigration agents. Harmonie Pirius, a fellow nurse, emphasized the shared vulnerability of those in the healthcare profession, stating, “It could have been any of us.”
U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar addressed the broader implications of recent events, asserting, “What is unfolding in our state is not accidental. It is part of a coordinated effort to target Black and brown, immigrant and Muslim communities through fear, racial profiling and intimidation.”
