Trump Proposes Increase in Global Tariff Rate Following Supreme Court Ruling

In response to a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision, President Donald Trump has put forward a proposal to increase global tariffs to 15%, an adjustment from the previously suggested 10%. This announcement follows the court’s ruling, which deemed many of Trump’s tariffs on imports unconstitutional.

The President’s proposal, shared on social media, indicates his intention to continue utilizing tariffs as a primary strategy in reshaping global trade practices. Despite the judicial setback, Trump plans to employ another legal framework to impose these tariffs, although it offers more limited authority.

Trump has already signed an executive order allowing him to enforce a 10% import tax globally, effective from Tuesday, coinciding with his State of the Union address. However, these tariffs are restricted to a 150-day duration unless Congress extends them.

While the White House has not responded to questions regarding the timing of a new order to implement a 15% tariff, Trump criticized the Supreme Court’s decision, labeling it “ridiculous” and “anti-American.”

The court, in a 6-3 decision, ruled that unilateral tariff adjustments by the President were unconstitutional, citing Congress’s exclusive power to tax. Nonetheless, Trump is pursuing alternative tariff measures under different sections of federal legislation, which necessitate a Commerce Department investigation.

Following the ruling, Trump voiced strong disapproval of the justices, including Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett, whom he appointed. He expressed his frustration, calling the decision “an embarrassment,” while praising Justice Brett Kavanaugh for his dissenting opinion and describing him as his “new hero.”

Tariffs have been a cornerstone of Trump’s economic policy framework, which he claims addresses multiple issues such as trade imbalances, the revitalization of U.S. manufacturing, and international diplomacy challenges.

Despite assertions that foreign governments bear the cost of tariffs, federal data revealed the U.S. Treasury has collected over $133 billion from these import taxes as of December. However, the Supreme Court did not clarify the status of these collected funds.

Democrats swiftly criticized Trump’s tariff increase plans, with the House Ways and Means Committee accusing him of increasing consumer costs. California Governor Gavin Newsom also criticized the move, suggesting it indicated Trump’s disregard for the public’s welfare.
