Wisconsin Governor Candidate Tom Tiffany Supports Total Abortion Ban
Republican Representative Tom Tiffany, now running for governor of Wisconsin, has expressed support for a complete abortion ban without exceptions for rape, incest, or the life of the mother.
Since 2021, Tiffany has represented Wisconsin’s 7th District and has received endorsements from several anti-abortion organizations, such as Wisconsin Right to Life and Turning Point USA.
In 2023, Tiffany, as part of Congress’ Republican Study Committee, co-authored a fiscal year 2024 budget proposal that supported the Life at Conception Act. This bill aims to extend personhood rights to fetuses and embryos.
The proposed legislation seeks to ban abortion nationwide, potentially equating abortion to murder legally. If enacted, both patients seeking abortions and the doctors performing them could face criminal charges.
Being a federal bill, the Life at Conception Act would supersede state laws on abortion access. Notably, since the overturning of Roe v. Wade by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2022, voters in 14 states have endorsed measures to safeguard or expand abortion rights.
The bill’s implications might also threaten access to in vitro fertilization and other fertility treatments.
The vice president of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America praised the proposed budget, describing it as “the strongest pro-life budget yet.” Students for Life Action, another anti-abortion entity, supported the proposal, emphasizing its role in permanently protecting “innocent human life.”
Although the budget proposal was not enacted into law, the Republican Study Committee has continued to endorse the Life at Conception Act in its 2025 and 2026 budget plans.
Surveys indicate that the majority of Wisconsin residents are in favor of protecting abortion rights. After launching his gubernatorial campaign, Tiffany removed references to his anti-abortion stance from his campaign website.
In 2023, Tiffany also cosponsored the Heartbeat Protection Act, which would prohibit abortions beyond six weeks of gestation. However, he has not cosponsored the Life at Conception Act itself.
Tiffany is anticipated to secure victory in the Republican primary for governor on August 11, with his Democratic opponent to be selected on the same day.
