Maine Senator Susan Collins Faces Scrutiny Over Key Senate Votes
Senator Susan Collins of Maine, a member of the Senate HELP Committee, has recently faced criticism due to her voting record on issues that impact women. These votes are gaining attention as Collins seeks reelection in a political climate where women voters are anticipated to have significant influence.
The Senate HELP Committee, with the acronym standing for health, education, labor, and pensions, is responsible for legislative oversight in these areas. Senator Collins has been part of this committee since 2015, and her recent decisions have sparked debate.
Collins, who is considered one of the most vulnerable Republican senators in the upcoming midterms, is contending with Democratic challenger state Sen. Troy Jackson.
Controversial Votes on Pay Equity and Sick Leave
In June 2023, Collins, along with fellow Republicans on the HELP Committee, voted against the Paycheck Fairness Act. This legislation aimed to ensure that wage differences between men and women were based on merit-related factors like education and experience. During the discussions, Collins supported two amendments; one would have exempted employers from liability if they conducted a pay-equity audit, and the other aimed to remove the merit-based wage requirement. Both amendments encountered bipartisan resistance, and the act did not advance to a full Senate vote.
The previous month, Collins voted against the Healthy Families Act, designed to allow American workers to earn paid sick leave. She also supported an amendment exempting seasonal workers from this benefit. Notably, women constitute a significant portion of seasonal workers in industries such as retail and hospitality. A 2022 Health Affairs analysis highlighted that women generally have less access to paid sick leave compared to men. Like the Paycheck Fairness Act, the Healthy Families Act did not proceed to a full Senate vote.
Healthcare Legislation and Reproductive Rights
In September 2023, a bipartisan effort to allocate $26 billion to improve primary care access and address healthcare worker shortages was considered by the HELP Committee. This bill proposed training for new healthcare professionals, particularly in rural areas. However, an amendment was introduced by Collins and other Republicans to prevent funding for abortion training. The amendment did not pass, and Collins ultimately voted against moving the bill forward.
As the political landscape shifts, a recent Fox News poll indicates a close race, with Jackson leading Collins by a narrow margin of two points.
