Shooting Near Brown University Leaves Two Dead and Multiple Injured

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A tragic incident occurred near Brown University on Saturday, resulting in at least two fatalities and several injuries, according to a law enforcement official. The university, an Ivy League institution, quickly issued an active shooter alert, advising students and staff to seek shelter during their final exams.

Authorities have not yet disclosed specific details regarding the number of victims, their conditions, or the events leading up to the shooting. The official, who provided information under the condition of anonymity, revealed that at least two people had died.

Initially, university alerts indicated that a suspect had been detained, but subsequent notifications clarified that no arrests had been made and the search for the suspect or suspects was ongoing, as reported through the university’s emergency notification system.

Providence Councilmember John Goncalves, whose jurisdiction includes the Brown campus, expressed his sorrow saying, “We’re still getting information about what’s going on, but we’re just telling people to lock their doors and to stay vigilant. As a Brown alum, someone who loves the Brown community and represents this area, I’m heartbroken. My heart goes out to all the family members and the folks who’ve been impacted.”

The shooting took place near the Barus & Holley building, a complex that houses Brown University’s School of Engineering and physics department. According to the university, the building contains over 100 laboratories along with numerous classrooms and offices. At the time of the incident, engineering design exams were in progress within the facility.

Amidst the chaos, President Donald Trump took to social media to extend his condolences, stating, “God bless the victims and the families of the victims!”

As police responded to the emergency, students were instructed to remain sheltered, and the public was advised to avoid the area. Media personnel on-site were warned to take cover due to the ongoing danger.

Details remain scarce as investigations continue. Kristy DosReis, the chief public information officer for Providence, mentioned that police are actively investigating the scene. The FBI is also assisting with the response efforts.

Brown University, a private institution, enrolls approximately 7,300 undergraduate and over 3,000 graduate students. Saturday marked the second day of final exams for the fall semester.
