Scott Brown Announces New Hampshire Senate Bid, Citing Discontent with Current Policies

Former Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown has declared his intention to run for a U.S. Senate seat in New Hampshire, marking another chapter in his political career. Known for his strong opposition to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Brown is now setting his sights on returning to the Senate.

In his campaign launch video, Brown voiced support for former President Donald Trump and expressed his determination to challenge what he described as the “extreme left.” He specifically criticized policies he claims support Hamas and allow men to participate in women’s sports.

During an interview with WMUR, Brown explained his motivation for running: “The reason I’m running is I’m kind of fed up with the federal delegation,” citing issues such as open borders, sanctuary cities, and the protection of what he referred to as the “so-called rights of illegals.”

Political History and Opposition to the ACA

Brown gained national attention in 2010 when he unexpectedly won a special election to replace the late Senator Ted Kennedy. However, he lost his reelection bid in 2012 to Elizabeth Warren.

Throughout his tenure, Brown was a fervent critic of the ACA, arguing it was financially unsustainable and would exacerbate the federal deficit. He once stated, “We need to drop this whole scheme of federally controlled health care,” during a 2010 debate as the law was being considered. Brown subsequently voted for the repeal of the ACA in 2011.

Contrary to Brown’s claims, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has consistently reported that the ACA actually reduces the federal deficit, as highlighted by a report from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

Past Senate Campaigns and New Hampshire Connections

In 2014, Brown ran for the U.S. Senate in New Hampshire, facing accusations of “carpetbagging” due to his recent change of residence to the state. Despite framing his opposition to the ACA as a matter of principle rather than economics, he lost the race to Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen by nearly 16,000 votes. Brown later served as the U.S. Ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa during the Trump administration.

Current Political Landscape

As the first notable Republican to enter the 2026 Senate race in New Hampshire, Brown faces an already vocal opponent in U.S. Rep. Chris Pappas, the only prominent Democrat thus far. Pappas responded to the announcement on social media, stating, “It’s official: MAGA loyalist Scott Brown just announced he’s running to flip this seat red. New Hampshire rejected him before, and we can do it again.”

Brown’s entry into the race sets the stage for a potentially heated political battle as New Hampshire voters prepare for the upcoming election cycle.
