North Carolina’s Upcoming Senate Race: Cooper and Whatley Set to Compete

In North Carolina, the political landscape is heating up as former Governor Roy Cooper and RNC Chairman Michael Whatley prepare to compete for the state’s open U.S. Senate seat. This race is anticipated to be one of the key contests in the upcoming election cycle.

Roy Cooper, who successfully served as governor for two terms starting in 2016, emerged victorious even as Donald Trump clinched the state in both presidential elections during his tenure. This track record fuels optimism among Senate Democrats that Cooper can secure a win and potentially aid in reclaiming the Senate majority.

Cooper’s decision to run was initially reported by Axios, highlighting his prominence as a favored Democratic candidate. Michael Bitzer, a political scientist from Catawba College, commented to WRAL, “If you asked any D.C. Democrat who their top choices would be for the party’s nomination in North Carolina, their number one, two, and three picks would be Roy Cooper.”

Michael Whatley’s Role and Controversies

Michael Whatley, previously the chair of the North Carolina Republican Party, was personally chosen by Trump to lead the RNC in 2023. His selection is largely attributed to his acceptance of debunked claims regarding the 2020 election’s legitimacy.

In a November 2020 radio interview, Whatley stated, “Regardless of how these lawsuits come out around the country with the presidential race, we do know that there was massive fraud that took place. We know that it took place in places like Milwaukee and Detroit and Philadelphia.” He reiterated similar sentiments in January 2021, emphasizing the need for a national conversation on election integrity.

Despite Trump’s victory margin of three points in North Carolina, Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein won the governorship by a significant 14-point margin. Stein’s success is partly credited to his opponent, former Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, whose far-right views and controversial remarks marred his campaign. Notably, Whatley had endorsed Robinson.

Implications and Political Analysis

Retiring Republican Senator Thom Tillis advised the GOP to reconsider strategies following Robinson’s defeat, cautioning against veering too far right. He remarked on the importance of learning from this outcome.

The Cook Political Report has categorized the North Carolina Senate race as a “toss-up,” indicating a highly competitive and uncertain outcome.
