According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), federal officers were seeking a different individual when they attempted to halt Salgado Araujo’s vehicle. DHS reported that Salgado Araujo attempted to ram an ICE vehicle, prompting an officer to open fire in self-defense.
Salgado Araujo’s family mentioned he was on the verge of obtaining legal status in the U.S., having lived there for 35 years. His son, Ronaldo Salgado, suggested his father might have been frightened, mistaking the unmarked vehicles for potential thieves.
