Christian Nationalism Advocated by Pastor Joel Webbon in Recent Document

Joel Webbon, a pastor based in Texas, is one of the co-signers of a 2023 document titled “The Statement on Christian Nationalism and the Gospel.” The document, created by figures like Oklahoma state Sen. Dusty Deevers and former Trump administration official William Wolfe, calls for the United States to formally acknowledge Christ in its laws, abolish abortion, outlaw marriage equality, and regain national sovereignty from global entities deemed a threat to civilization.

Webbon has taken a more extreme stance, advocating for Christian nationalists to seize political power to “crush our enemies and reward our friends.” He has stated that Americans are “too degenerate, stupid, and cowardly” to follow the Constitution and should be governed by a Christian dictator who enforces Christian values, including adding the Apostles’ Creed to the Constitution and banning various practices such as abortion, pornography, and birth control. He also supports prohibiting women from voting and excluding non-Christians from his neighborhood.

During a recent appearance on “The Green Dragon Tavern Show,” Webbon discussed his vision for non-Christians under Christian nationalism. He said that while private worship in homes would be allowed, public displays of non-Christian faiths would be banned to avoid God’s judgment on the nation.

Webbon explained, “I would not have a government police system that’s going into private homes of Muslims or Jews or Hindus and trying to catch them mid-family worship as they’re bowing down to some idol… However, I would be comfortable saying there will be no Islamic parades… public calls to prayer. I would say you can have church bells—Christian church bells—that everyone in town can hear, including the non-Christians and they can just kind of put up with it… But you could not have Islamic siren calls to prayer, even if they were pretty.”

He further argued, “It’s not even in the Muslims’ best interest for them to have public high places to false gods… He and his family would experience more joy and more peace and more tangible temporal blessing in their life if they worshipped Allah privately and did not bring reproach upon the nation publicly so that the nation could continue to receive the blessings of the triune God.”

Webbon’s Broader Influence and Events

Webbon serves as a pastor at the Covenant Bible Church in Texas and is the founder of Right Response Ministries. He is organizing the “Christ Is King: How To Defeat Trashworld” conference next year, which will feature several far-right Christian nationalist activists, including Dusty Deevers, Steve Deace, Stephen Wolfe, Auron MacIntyre, and Andrew Isker. William Wolfe, a co-editor of “The Statement on Christian Nationalism and the Gospel,” is also a close associate of Russ Vought, a Project 2025 leader aiming to infuse a future Trump administration with Christian nationalist ideals.

Every day, Right Wing Watch exposes extremism to help the public, activists, and journalists understand the strategies and tactics of anti-democratic forces—and respond to an increasingly aggressive and authoritarian far-right movement. The threat is growing, but our resources are not. Any size contribution will help us continue our work and become more effective at disrupting the ideologies, people, and organizations that threaten our freedom and democracy. Please make an investment in Right Wing Watch’s defense of the values we share.
