Ohio Representative Mike Turner continues to endorse foreign military engagements, notably the ongoing war in Iran.
Since joining Congress in 2002, Turner has served Ohio’s 10th District and is currently campaigning for his 13th term.
From March to September 2026, Turner cast six votes opposing the termination of the Iran War. This conflict has contributed to a significant rise in gas prices, with many Americans now paying more than $4 per gallon at fuel stations.
The war is also perceived as a breach of a pledge by President Donald Trump, who had promised not to initiate new wars if elected.
Turner argues that the military action is essential to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. This assertion has been challenged by foreign policy analysts, including Joe Kent, the former Director of the National Counterterrorism Center under Trump.
Public opinion appears to diverge from Turner’s stance. A recent Pew Research Center survey indicates that 65% of Americans disapprove of the ongoing conflict and its management.
Turner’s history of supporting military interventions is not new. He backed the Iraq War, which lasted from 2003 to 2011 and resulted in the deaths of over 4,500 U.S. military personnel.
In a 2006 interview with KPBS, Turner criticized those opposing the Iraq War, suggesting they were merely seeking political leverage.
“I regret that this issue, of Iraq, continues to be made a political issue,” he commented. “Something as simple as the war on terror, where we should have full and unanimous support from everyone, turns into a litany of political complaints and assaults on the administration.”
In 2018, Turner labeled Trump’s airstrikes on Syria as a “necessary action.”
According to OpenSecrets, a nonprofit organization monitoring campaign finance, Turner has received upwards of $2 million in contributions from defense industry sources. By 2024, he ranked ninth among legislators receiving defense-related campaign funding.
His Democratic challenger this election cycle is Kristina Knickerbocker, an Air Force veteran who stated in June her intention to vote against the Iran War if elected.
“As a veteran, I know the true cost of war,” Knickerbocker remarked. “I would never vote to send our troops into harm’s way without a plan, a purpose, and the full authorization of Congress.”
