North Carolina Man Sentenced for Assaulting Officers During Capitol Riot

WASHINGTON—A North Carolina resident received a prison sentence today for his involvement in the January 6, 2021, breach of the U.S. Capitol, where he assaulted law enforcement officers. This event disrupted a joint session of the U.S. Congress, which was in the process of certifying the 2020 presidential election results.

Curtis Davis, 45, from Snow Hill, North Carolina, was sentenced to 24 months in prison, followed by 36 months of supervised release, with the first six months under home detention. He was also ordered to pay $2,000 in restitution. The sentence was delivered by U.S. District Judge Amit P. Mehta after Davis pleaded guilty on June 10, 2024, to one count of assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers.

Court documents reveal that Davis entered the U.S. Capitol at approximately 3:00 p.m. on January 6 through the East Rotunda doors. Inside, he confronted law enforcement officers who were trying to control the crowd. Davis attacked a Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officer and attempted to seize the officer’s baton.

At around 3:09 p.m., Davis reportedly punched an MPD officer’s face shield and ignored orders to vacate the premises. He later assaulted another MPD officer in the head and seized a riot shield from a different officer, using it to push against a line of rioters in defiance of police efforts.

Davis was initially expelled from the Rotunda but returned to the East Rotunda doors, where he attempted to force his way back into the Rotunda alongside other rioters. He reached the front of the rioters’ line and punched an officer’s riot shield three times.

Later that evening, Davis recorded a video on his cell phone of police officers, then turned the camera to his fist, stating, “Them knuckles right there, from one of those m—f— faces at the Capitol.”

The FBI arrested Davis on December 8, 2023, in Snow Hill.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the Department of Justice National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section are handling the prosecution, with assistance from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina.

The case was investigated by the FBI’s Charlotte and Washington Field Offices, with support from the U.S. Capitol Police and the Metropolitan Police Department.

In the 45 months since January 6, 2021, over 1,532 individuals have been charged across nearly all 50 states for their roles in the Capitol breach, with more than 571 charged with assaulting or impeding law enforcement, a felony. The investigation is ongoing.
