Nevada Gov. Lombardo Supports End of Universal Mail-In Voting

Nevada Governor Supports Potential Move to Restrict Mail-In Voting

Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo has expressed support for the idea of ending mail-in voting, despite his history of utilizing it himself.

Former President Donald Trump recently suggested he might introduce a national voter ID law through an executive order, which would include a significant reduction in mail-in voting. The enforceability of such an order remains uncertain, as voting regulations are typically determined at the state level.

Nevada is among eight states practicing “universal mail-in voting,” automatically mailing ballots to every registered voter. When asked by the Nevada Independent about Trump’s proposal, Lombardo stated, “I would, of course, support President Trump’s efforts to end universal mail-in voting.” However, he did not clarify his stance on other forms of mail-in voting.

Records from the Clark County Election Department show that Lombardo has voted by mail four times in the past five years, including during the 2024 presidential primary and general election, as well as the 2020 general election.

Interestingly, a move to eliminate mail-in voting could negatively impact Lombardo and other Republicans, especially considering that nearly 50% of rural Nevada voters, who predominantly supported Trump in 2024, utilized mail-in ballots.

This stance isn’t Lombardo’s first alignment with Trump’s election-related positions. In 2022, he publicly questioned the legitimacy of the 2020 election without fully endorsing Trump’s claims of voter fraud. Additionally, Lombardo’s political action committee backed a well-known election skeptic last year.

Lombardo secured his gubernatorial position in 2022 with a narrow margin of less than 15,500 votes and is seeking re-election next year. His expected opponent is state Attorney General Aaron Ford.
