ATHENS, Greece — In a legal case that has attracted international attention, Manchester United defender Harry Maguire received a 15-month suspended sentence on Wednesday. This ruling stems from an altercation with police on the Greek island of Mykonos in August 2020, according to court officials.

Pressure is mounting on Maguire’s club and the English Football Association, with lawyers for the plaintiffs urging them to impose sanctions on the player.

Initially, Maguire was given a 21-month suspended sentence shortly after the incident. However, his appeal led to a retrial at a court located on the island of Syros, the administrative hub of the region.

The appeals process faced multiple delays, including one due to a lawyers’ strike.

Convicted of several charges, including inflicting minor bodily harm, insulting police officers, attempted bribery, and unlawful violence, Maguire, who is set to turn 33, was not present at the trial. His sentence has been suspended for three years, and he retains the right to contest the decision at Greece’s Supreme Court in Athens.

Calls for Disciplinary Measures Against Maguire

Maguire has consistently denied any wrongdoing. In his 2020 statement, he asserted, “If anything, myself, family, and friends are the victims.” However, criticism from the legal representatives of police officers involved in the incident remains strong.

Ioannis Paradissis, a lawyer for the police officers, accused Maguire of arrogance and a lack of remorse, telling The Associated Press, “He has never apologized — not even once. Not a single apology. As of today, he has a criminal record.”

Paradissis further expressed hopes that Maguire’s club and the Football Association of England will take action, questioning the player’s continued participation in national teams given his criminal record. “How is it possible for someone who now has a criminal record and has been convicted of acts of violence against police officers to continue to participate in national teams and in the England team? It’s unacceptable,” he stated.

The lawyer also relayed sentiments from the police officers, who were disappointed by the absence of an apology, which they considered a basic gesture of respect.

The statement highlighted concerns about the impact on Maguire’s role as a public figure and athlete, stressing that such a criminal record is “incompatible with the values of sport, and with the role-model status that elite athletes are expected to embody.”
