Incident at Minneapolis Town Hall Involving Rep. Ilhan Omar

During a town hall meeting in Minneapolis, an individual sprayed an unknown liquid on Democratic U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar. The suspect was quickly subdued by attendees and detained by authorities. This event took place amidst heightened tensions over federal immigration enforcement, following the fatal shooting of two individuals in the area earlier this month.

In video footage of the disruption, a voice could be heard exclaiming, “Oh my god, he sprayed something on her.” The crowd responded with applause as the man was restrained and his hands were secured.

Prior to the incident, Rep. Omar had been advocating for the abolition of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and had called for the resignation or impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. The recent shooting of protestors against deportations has led to increased calls for Noem’s removal, with limited Republican support.

Immediate Response and Investigation

Minneapolis police reported that the attacker used a syringe to dispense the liquid, which emitted a strong vinegar-like odor, according to an Associated Press journalist present. The substance, which appeared to be a light-brown liquid, has yet to be identified by officials. No immediate physical reactions were observed among the approximately 100 attendees.

The suspect, identified as 55-year-old Anthony Kazmierczak, was arrested for third-degree assault and detained at the county jail. The public defender’s office was not immediately available for comment regarding legal representation for Kazmierczak.

Omar’s Resilience and Reaction

Despite the attack, Rep. Omar continued to address the audience for another 25 minutes, emphasizing her refusal to be intimidated. “ICE cannot be reformed,” Omar had asserted just before the incident occurred.

Afterward, Omar assured her followers on social platform X, stating, “I’m ok. I’m a survivor so this small agitator isn’t going to intimidate me from doing my work. I don’t let bullies win.”

Broader Political Context and Reactions

The White House has not provided a comment on the incident. President Donald Trump has been vocally critical of Omar, making disparaging remarks about her during a recent speech in Iowa. Trump’s comments have drawn significant negative reactions, particularly from Omar’s supporters.

In response to the attack, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and other officials condemned the violence. Gov. Walz highlighted the need to end inflammatory political rhetoric. Similarly, Rep. Nancy Mace, a Republican from South Carolina, expressed her disapproval of the physical attack despite disagreeing with Omar’s political stance.

Increasing Threats to Lawmakers

This event comes on the heels of another incident involving an assault on U.S. Rep. Maxwell Frost during the Sundance Film Festival. Threats to members of Congress have been rising, with a significant increase reported by the U.S. Capitol Police. In 2025, 14,938 concerning incidents were documented, marking a substantial rise compared to the previous year.

In light of these developments, U.S. Capitol Police have enhanced security measures and continue to collaborate with federal partners to address and mitigate threats to lawmakers.
